  45. accuracy is contained herein, this document has been prepared more as a
  46. general guide to Lila Feng for her devoted fans, and probably contains
  47. as much hearsay and speculation as fact.

  56. 1) Who is Lila Feng?
  57.  
  58. Lila Feng is an attractive Asian woman, who is one of the weather
  59. anchor-women on Canada's own "The Weather Network" cable television
  60. station.  Seen coast to coast, usually in the late evening, Lila has
  61. attracted a cult-like following.  In the words of a fan:
  62.  
  63.   "I watched Lila since the day she started for the network.  She was
  64.   unpolished, she was not so professional with her makeup, and she was
  65.   so nervous while giving the weathercasts that, to put it bluntly, her
  66.   saliva kept getting in the way of her words.  :-)  However, her shy
  67.   demeanor only added to her charm, and from that day I was smitten with
  68.   her beauty.

  70.   Since then I have watched Lila transform herself into a professional
  71.   veteran who does her job with ease.  Lila is true poetry in motion. 
  72.   My only regret is that she is on so late in the day.  :-) "

  74. Indeed, should The Weather Network ever decide to lay Lila off in favour
  75. of cheaper labour, it would not surprise us if they were deluged with
  76. hate mail demanding her immediate recall.

  80. 2) What are Lila's responsibilities on The Weather Network?
  81.  
  82. At one time Lila was quite active in forecasting the weather to
  83. viewers.  However, as she is no longer seen in that role it is possible
  84. she has been given a promotion.
  85.  
  86. Lila can now be seen in the late-hours of the day in a miriad of "desk
  87. reporting" roles.  She discusses major weather disasters, as well as
  88. notable weather facts from previous years.  One of her major
  89. responsibilities is reporting on "Earth Watch".
  90.  
  91. In a P.R. clip shown recently, I was surprised that Lila takes an active
  92. (major?) role in finding suitable material for "Earth Watch", actually
  93. does the editing(!) for that segment, as well as doing her own makeup. 
  94. Indeed, everything this woman does seems to add to her fans' adolation
  95. of her!

  126. At the moment, probably not...however bear in mind that this forum is brand 
  127. new.  The newsgroup was created on December 16, 1993.  Prior to the newsgroup,
  128. there was a small mailing list in operation since October 15, 1993.  When
  129. membership increases to a reasonable size then perhaps we will look into
  130. contacting her by some means and let her know she has a fan club.

  143. by Brian Reid <reid@decwrl.dec.com>, about 9,300 people are estimated to
  144. read the alt.fan.lila-feng newsgroup world-wide.

  164. Since this newsgroup was created on December 16, 1993 there have been 79
  165. articles posted (just under 2 per day).  This amount will probably
  166. increase drastically when more people are made aware of this newsgroup.

  173. 7) How can I increase the awareness and popularity of this group?

  175. First of all, bear in mind that this forum is relatively new.  It was
  176. only recently that the Lila FAQ was approved for cross-posting to
  177. news.answers.  It may take some time before many sites carry this group.
  178. However, if you wish to help increase people's awareness of this group,
  179. perhaps one of the suggestions listed below may appeal to you:
  180.  
  181. - Word of mouth.  Don't underestimate the power of word of mouth.  Tell
  182. your friends if they are fans of Lila Feng!  Perhaps consider posting
  183. something around your university or work site (if you don't mind being
  184. labelled as being somewhat "strange").  :-)
  185.  
  186. - If you carry the alt.fan.lila-feng newsgroup on your system, perhaps
  187. you'd consider taking part in the 'arbitron' survey compiled by Brian
  188. Reid?  Each month, the top 2840 groups are listed, including the number
  189. of readers world-wide, the percentage of sites that carry the group, the
  190. number of articles, etc.  This information is compiled by data sent from
  191. participating sites, purely on a volunteer basis.  This is one way the
  192. alt.fan.lila-feng group can climb higher on the ratings list, thereby
  193. possibly gaining the notice of sites or subscribers not currently aware
  194. of this group.  I'll post this information from time to time to
  195. alt.fan.lila-feng for your interest.

  199. 8) How old is Lila?  What nationality is she?  Is she single or married?

  201. Although the answer to many of these questions is not known at this
  202. time, I have heard from a number of people who knew Lila in the past who
  203. have contributed the following information:
  204.  
  205. Lila is Chinese, probably 2nd generation.  She was born in Nova Scotia.
  206. Her father James, who is a lawyer, is from Shianghai and her mother Tina
  207. is a 2nd generation Chinese Filipino from the province of Fujian.  It
  208. has been said that her mother is (was?) "a serious crab", but one might
  209. forgive the motives of a mother with an attractive daughter.  :-)
  210.  
  211. Lila is dynamic and friendly, apparently unmarried, and is about 28 years
  212. old.  It is quite likely that Lila does not know how to speak Chinese.  In
  213. secondary school Lila seemed quite talented in interpretive dance.  It is
  214. not known if she has continued with this art.
  215.  
  216. Her family name, "Feng" is the same as the Cantonese name "Fong" but her
  217. family hails from Si Chuen province in mainland China, and her name is
  218. in the dialect of Chinese spoken there (Mandarin?).
  219.  
  220. She grew up in a suburb of Montreal and attended elementary and secondary
  221. school there.  She attended Beaconsfield High School somewhere around 
  222. 1979-1981 (give or take).  From there she went on to CEGEP at Marianopolis
  223. College, a private school, from which she graduated around 1984.  She then
  224. went on to McGill University where she received a degree in communications.

  226. In secondary school she was in the English-only stream instead of a
  227. billingual stream, so even though she is a "Quebecer" she may not speak
  228. any French.  However, this probably makes her even more appealing to 75%
  229. of Canadians.  :-)
  230.  
  231. Apparently, she invented a new position and got herself elected to it when 
  232. she was in Communications at McGill.
  233.  
  234. She did a lot of work producing at the local CTV affiliate, CFCF, and
  235. may have also worked at CBMT, Canada's first television station, the local
  236. English CBC affiliate.

  238. There was a full-page article on Lila in the Montreal Gazette a few years
  239. after she graduated from McGill (between 1988 and 1991).  If anyone can get
  240. access to a computerized index of Canadian Periodicals and send in the
  241. article, perhaps it can be excerpted for inclusion in this document.

  243. It may be possible to get a bio on Lila from The Weather Network.

  265. Yes, there is currently one GIF available that shows Lila in her anchor
  266. duties, wearing a black jacket and white shirt with a floral design.

  268. You may retrieve this file by FTP via itre.uncecs.edu.  Chdir to the
  269. /pub/satellite/images directory, and then get "lila1.gif".  Make sure you
  270. do a binary transfer.
